Box turtles are among Arlington’s indigenous wildlife, and the annual Turtle Trot at Bluemont Park is held in large part for their benefit.

As Arlington has become more urbanized in recent decades, the county’s turtles have become more threatened by cars and lawn mowers. Recently, naturalists with the Arlington Department of Parks & Recreation have begun advising motorists and homeowners to be more mindful of potential encounters with box turtles.

This year, the Turtle Trot will be held again at Bluemont Park, on Saturday, May 17 beginning at 10 A.M. Registration for the race is $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.
