Box office weekending 3/3

It was a pretty slow weekend at the box office with only one movie hitting double digits at the box office, despite having three movies premiering in the top 5.

At the top spot this week is the premire of Jack and the Giant Slayer (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ6aeaGQKUE) with $28 million. The movie did open better then the last fairy tale adapted book Hansel and Gretel which only premiered with $19 million it’s first weekend.

Still going strong and at #2 is Identity Thief (clip ‘Flaw in the plan’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nrn-irkM2aA) with $9.7 million in its 4th week. This brings the total box office above the $100million mark with $107 million.

Premiering in the #3 spot is 21 and Over (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jToqrglXf98) with $9 million. This movie is certainly a younger version of The Hangover but it seems to lack the audience appeal that the movie got.

Coming in at #4 is the premiere of The Last Exorcism Part II (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h8eyHaoNMA) with $8 million. This already surpasses its $5 million budget, but the lack of movies at the box office helped it get such a good opening weekend.

Rounding out the top 5 and dropping three spots is Snitch (Clip ‘Agreement’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q33mqlFziOY) with $7.7 million. This brings the 2-week total to $24.4 million. Despite get a 56% approval rate from Rotten Tomates, it doesn’t seem to be doing to well at the box office.

There are two movies set to premiere this week: The prequel to how the wizard came to be in Wizard of Oz, Oz The Great and Powerful; and the thriller of a man who is drawn to a woman to seek revenge on a mutual man in Dead Man Down. I would be shocked if Oz The Great and Powerful is not #1 next week with a box office of at least $30 million. Dead Man Down might make the top 5, but I’m not sure it will make it to the #2 spot.
