There are two movies this weekend that crack into the top 5 with the #1 movie making 8x as much as the #2 spot.
As predicted Oz the Great and Powerful (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=trh4VOgKnSE) dominated over the weekend, premiering with a strong $80.2 million. The movie also made $69.9 million in the foreign box office, bringing its worldwide opening to $150.1 million.
Falling down one spot to #2 is Jack and the Giant Slayer (trailer #2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=snRl5SL9cG8) with $10 million. This brings the 2-week total to $43.8 million. The movie hasn’t been doing as well as expected and doesn’t appear that it will be able to match out it’s $195 million budget.
Falling down one spot to #3 but still going strong in the top 5 is Identity Thief (clip: ‘Diana attacks Sandy’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkMK3q6VBkl) with $6.3 million, bringing it’s 5-week total to $116.5 million. The movie hasn’t been getting the best reviews by the critics, but the fans seem to enjoy it allowing it to cross over the $100-million mark in less then a month and allowing it to remain the top 5 4 out of the 5 weeks.
Coming in the #4 spot is the premiere of Dead Man Down (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WKmnAcMTKM) with $5.3 million. Not one of Colin Farrell’s better premieres and its doubtful if it will even reach ½ a million at the box office.
Down one spot and rounding out the top five is Snitch (clip ‘John tells his wife’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhKzha4q4Pg) with $5.1 million. This brings the 3-week total to $31.8 million.
There are two movies set to premiere this week: the story of a magician trying to get back on top in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone; and the thriller about a 9-1-1 operator that goes above and beyond the call of duty in The Call. It’s likely both movies will reach the top 5, but I expect Oz The Great and Powerful to remain the top spot for the 2nd week in a row.
