This week is full of surprises as the box office. The movie that was expected to have a solid opening, didn’t, and the movie expected to do ok, was able to nab the top spot.
The Butler (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUA7rr0bOcc) surprises everyone and grabs the top spot with $25 million. The movie has an all-star cast and has been getting some talks about the Oscars.
Staying in the #2 spot for the 2nd straight week is We’re the Milers (Clip ‘The Spider Bit Me’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsvQmc4Mmbg) with $17.7 million, bringing the 2-week total to $69.5 million. The movie has been able to beat out it’s $37 million budget, but I don’t think it’s doing as well as was expected.
Dropping two spots to #3 is Elysium (Clip ‘The Heist’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhA9rs0TI-w) with $13.6 million. This brings the 2-week total to $55.9 million. The movie had a strong opening, but dropped a lot over the weekend. It doesn’t look like it will do well at the box office and perhaps it’s late summer release has something to do with that.
Premiering in the #4 spot is Kick-Ass 2 (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td921lYSBIA) with $13.5 million. The movie was expected to have a strong opening, attributing to the strong fan base that it has, but it looks like they didn’t make it out to the movie to see it. The movie came in just short of what the first movie premiered at and judging by the weekend, it might not have a solid box office at all.
Dropping two spots to #5 is Planes (Clip ‘Rochelle’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFrm0PD6q2M) with $13.1 million. This brings the 2-week total to $45 million. This is just another Disney movie that has failed this summer. Kid’s movies as a whole have done bad this summer with only Despicable Me 2 doing well. `
The big movie coming out this week is the first movie of what could potentially be a 6-part series: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. This is the latest Young Adult novel to be adapted to the big screen and fans of the book have been anxiously waiting for it to come out. This movie should hit the top spot next week and should have a good haul over it’s 5-day opening.
