The big news this weekend was the 84th Annual Academy Awards but despite that, it was still a pretty good weekend at the box office with the top 5 movies hitting double digits.
Identity Thief (clip ‘Diner’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y252FMRSjRA) returns to the top spot this weekend with it’s $14 million haul. This brings the 3-week total to $93.6 million. While the movie only has a 24% approval rate from Rotten Tomatoes, it still looks like it will make well over the $100 million mark.
Premiering in the #2 spot is Snitch (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=riel5g9fgRc) with $13 million. While it’s not the best opening for Dwayne Johnson, it’s still a respectable one.
Moving up one spot to #3 is Escape from Planet Earth (clip ‘Food fight’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rix8cXirhUk) with $11 million. This brings the 2-week total to $35.1 million. Next week it should be able to beat out it’s $40 million budget.
Falling down one spot to #4 is Safe Haven (clip ‘Dancing’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ5SooFeFV0) with $10.6 million. This brings the 2-week total to $48 million. At this rate it should move up the chain to probably the #3 spot for Nicholas Sparks book, but I doubt it will get any higher then that.
Falling four spots to #5 is A Good Day To Die Hard (clip ‘Big Ole Bird’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtgvkFMbge4) with $10 million. This brings the 2-week total to $51.8 million. At this rate, it most likely won’t beat out its $98 million budget.
There are three movies set to premiere this Friday: The buddy comedy called 21 and Over; the latest fairy tale book coming to the big screen Jack and the Giant Slayer; and the latest exorcism film The Last Exorcism Part II. I don’t think any of these movies will be big box office movies. I wouldn’t be surprised if Identity Thief is at the top again next week.
