Box office week ending 2/17

Despite the fact that it was Valentine’s Day weekend, there are surprising numbers that came in at the box office, including a surprising movie at the top of the list.

Coming in at #1 is the 5th “Die Hard” film A Good Day To Die Hard (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVkzZD92cMQ) with $25 million over the weekend. For the 4-day opening weekend it was able to bring in $33.2 million, the most that premiered over the weekend. This is also the 2nd highest opening in the franchise, behind 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard.

Dropping one spot to #2 is Identity Thief (clip ‘Diana attacks Sandy’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkMK3q6VBkl) with $23.4 million, bringing its 2-week total to $70.7 million. Despite getting pretty bad reviews from critics, it’s having strong numbers at the box office, already doubling its budget for the movie.

Premiering in the #3 spot is the latest Nicholas Sparks adapted book Safe Haven (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejQEdUwv0ew) with $21.4 million, bringing its 4-day opening to $30.2 million. Despite having a strong opening day on Thursday, it declined over the weekend with reviews coming in poorly for the film. This is the 3rd highest opening for one Sparks’s book adaptations, coming in behind 2010’s Dear John and 2012’s The Lucky One.

Coming in at #4 is the premiere of Escape from Planet Earth (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1NhAUsysIk)with $16 million. This has been the highest 3D cartoon opening since 2010’s Toy Story 3.

Dropping three spots to #5 is Warm Bodies (clip ‘Perry lab attack: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NICahrinbqY) with $9 million. This brings the 3-week total to $50.2 million. The movie may have made out good at the box office this week thanks to large part of Valentine’s Day.

Other notes, Beautiful Creatures premiered with $7.4 million.

With 2 movies set to premiere this week: The thrilling drama about a man trying to take down a drug cartel to free his son from jail in Snitch; and a strange occurrence happening in a small town in Dark Skies. Snitch has a good shot at making the top 5, but I don’t expect it to make the top spot.
