Box office week ending 12/8

It was a very slow week at the box office with two movies hitting double digits and the bottom 3 with weak intake. It was a surprise as Frozen was able to cool down Catching Fire’s burning run at the box office.

Frozen (Clip ‘Let it go song’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEJ566EnNgM) grabs the top spot this week bringing in around $31.6 million, bringing it’s 2-week total to $134.2 million. In what looks to be the movie to turn around the slump that was happening with animated movies at the box office, Frozen should be able to beat out its $150 million budget next week.

Dropping to #2 is Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Clip ‘Make him pay for it’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6owOoPI4eQ) with around $27 million. This brings the 3-week total to $336.6 million. The movie was expected to have a good run at the box office, but fell short this week. At this rate, it should be able to beat out the first Hunger Games, which took in an impressive $409 domestically. With this weekend, the movie moves to the #3 spot for the year and should be able to take the top spot soon from Iron Man 3 which had a $409 box office.

Coming in at #3 is the premiere of Out of the Furnace (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw0qH34cbRE) with $5.3 million. The slow box office helped this movie get into the top 5. I wouldn’t expect this movie to do much better then it did this week as December can be slow because of all the ‘Oscar’ movies coming out.

Dropping one spot to #4 is Thor: The Dark World (Clip ‘Anyone else?’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0Vw1Lzbh2I) with $4.7 million, bringing the 5-week total to $193.6 million. The movie should be able to cross over the $200-million mark in a few weeks, but I wouldn’t expect it to do much better.

Rounding out the top 5 and moving up one spot is Delivery Man (Clip ‘I don’t have mental problems’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr2m782roq8) with $3.7 million, bringing the 3-week total to $24.7 million. The movie should be able to beat out it’s $26 million budget next week, but shouldn’t get to much more then that. This would be the 2nd movie this year in which a Vince Vaughn movie hasn’t done well at the box office (including The Internship which only took in $44 million at the box office).

There are two big movies set to come out this week. The 2nd movie of the Hobbit trilogy The Dessolation of Smaug; and Madea celebrates Christmas with her family in Madea Christmas. Both movies will probably be at the top of the box office next week, with the Hobbit movie most likely grabbing the top spot. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Madea’s fan are able to beat it out.
