There were a few big movies coming out this weekend but neither one was able to grab the top spot from the 2nd Hobbit movie. With the holidays this week, it should help the movies at the box office.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Clip 'Waken the Beast': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dSGMrB5TFo) comes in at the top spot with approximately $31.4 million. This brings the 2-week total to $127.5 million. The movie is doing well at the box office and is enjoying small drops over the last two weeks. It has a big test this week as 6 movies are set to come out to challenge it.

Premiering at #2 is Anchorman 2 (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRC80uIV0oE) with approximately $26.7 million, bringing the 5-day opening total to $40 million. The opening weekend didn’t have the same opening weekend that the first one had falling short about $2 million, but it’s hard to fully judge since this movie came out on Wednesday.

Dropping to #3 is Frozen (Clip 'No Heat Necessary': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ijR6Gh-fcs) with approximately $19.1 million. This brings the 5-week total to $191.5 million. With the holiday this week, it should do well at the box office this weekend, crossing it over the $200-million mark. The movie is currently the 3rd highest animated film this year and its doubtful it will catch Monsters University which brought it $268 million.

Coming in at #4 is the wide-premiere of American Hustle (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNt0eRK-pd0) with approximately $19.1 million, bringing the official 2-week total to $20.2 million. This movie by David O. Russell has a lot to live up to coming after two big successes in The Fighter, which made $93.6 million, and Silver Linings Playbook, with $132 million.

Rounding out the top 5 is the wide premiere of Saving Mr. Banks (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5kYmrjongg) with $9.3 million. This brings the 2-week total opening to $9.9 million. This sweet story of how Mary Poppins came to be had high expectations, but fell a little short. The movie does have a 80% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and might be the perfect movie to see this holiday week.

With the final week of the year we get 6 major movies all squeezing in their movies into 2013. The story of a daydreamer who goes on an adventure of a life time in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty; a group of soldiers fight for survival in Taliban in Lone Survivor; the story of the rise and fall of a wealthy stockbroker in The Wolf on Wall Street; a look at a large dysfunctional family in August: Osage County; a man is chosen to lead a small army against a vast army in 47 Ronin; two retired boxers come together for a boxing match in order to make money in Grudge Match.

With 6 movies coming out, odds are a few of them should find it’s way into the top 5. The Wolf on Wall Street or the Secret Life of Walter Mitty probably have the best shot at taking the top spot.
