Box office week ending 12/1

There were two movies that were released wide this week and they were able to crack into the top 5 but neither one was able to grab the top spot, despite giving it a run for it’s money.

Grabbing the top spot for the 2nd straight week is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Clip ‘Capitol Party’: with an estimated $74.5 million, bringing the 2-week total to $296.5 million. With a strong 2nd week, the movie is not the 3rd highest grossing film of the year and has a chance to grab the #2 spot from Despicable Me 2 that had $366.9 million.

Frozen (Trailer: had a strong weekend for it’s wide release bringing in an estimated $66.7 million, bringing the 2-week total to $93.3 million. Cartoon movies have been having a problem at the box office of late, but this movie looks to be able to bring some credibility back to have a family cartoon movie.

Dropping one spot to #3 is Thor: The Dark World (Clip ‘You need to get out of here’: with an estimated $11.1 million. This brings the 4-week total to $186.7 million. The movie just passes it’s $170 million budget despite have a 65% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is not having the box office it wanted and perhaps this will move future super hero movies back to the end of Spring/Summer time where it has succeeded.

Falling one spot to #4 is Best Man Holiday (Clip ‘Questioning’: with an estimated $8.4 million, bringing the 3-week total to $63.4 million. The movie should still do well at the box office for the next weeks where it won’t meet competition until mid-December when the new Madea movie comes out.

Rounding out the top 5 is the premiere of Homefront (Trailer: with an estimated $9.7 million. This thriller is a different kind of Jason Statham movie as he has a child he’s protecting, but still the same as he takes down meth dealers. Certainly a good one to watch if you are a Statham fan.

There is one big movie set to come out this week. A man trying to save his brother from a guy who wants to kill him in Out of the Furnace. This movie is most likely going to hit the top 5 but I don’t think it will have enough to grab one of the top 2 spots.
