Box office week ending 1/27

It was a slow weekend at the box office, with no movie reaching over $20 million. But there were two new movies that cracked the top five, including a new #1.

That new #1 premiere is the twist on a childhood fairytale Hansel and Gretel (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9246msCh7x4&feature=youtube_gdata_player) which brought in $19 million over the weekend. This is the latest film to be adapted from a children’s story book, the last being Snow White and the Huntsman, which had done fairly well in the box office.

Dropping to #2 is Mama (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Am7i7uM9r0&feature=youtube_gdata_player) which took in $12.8 million over the weekend. This brings the 2-week total to $48.6 million. This movie has been doing very well making over 3x as much as it’s $15 million budget and looks like it might make it to the $70-million plateau before it dies down.

Coming in at the #3 spot for the 2nd straight week is Silver Linings Playbook (Clip ‘Diner’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGwTUsH8l18&feature=youtube_gdata_player) with its $10 million weekend. This brings the 11-week total to $69.4 million. The studio’s plan on releasing the film slow across the country has been working with its success at the box office and also at the award’s ceremony (Jennifer Lawrence won at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Award for her role as Tiffany and is moving ahead at the Oscar race).

Falling down two spots to #4 is Zero Dark Thirty (www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eluMNblWw&feature=youtube_gdata_player) with $9.8 million over the weekend. This brings the 6-week total to $69.9 million. The movie is starting to slow down at the box office and this may hurt it’s chances at bringing home the Oscar gold come February.

Rounding out the top 5 is the premiere of Parker (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgYaiLcByRo&feature=youtube_gdata_player) with $7 million over the weekend.

Other premieres is Movie 43 which premiered in the #7 spot with $5 million over the weekend.

With two movies set to premiere this week, Warm Bodies and Bullet to the Head there might be a small change to the top 5. I'd expect Warm Bodies to make an appearance and maybe even grab the top spot but Bullet to the Head might have a harder time cracking the top 5.
