Box office week ending 1/13

There are three new movies this week in the top 5 and they all came in the top three spots.

Jumping up from the 16th spot last week to #1 this week is Zero Dark Thirty (trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAtWcvCxPhc&feature=youtube_gdata_player ) with $24 million over the weekend. This brings the 4-week total to $29.4 million. It had been in limited release during its first three weeks but was released wider this weekend with 2,800 more theaters.

Premiering in #2 spot is A Haunted House (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J50vA5VLR6k&feature=youtube_gdata_player ) with $18.8 million. This spoof, based on the Paranormal Activities series didn’t have a lot of attention until this past week and has been good reviews.

Coming in at #3 is the premiere of Gangster Squad (trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0G1HDBBK0&feature=youtube_gdata_player )with $16.7 million. The movie had high hopes, especially with the all-star cast, but has been getting mediocre reviews, which could keep audiences away from it.

Falling two spots to #4 is Django Unchained (clip ‘Curious’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juU_t70zjjc&feature=youtube_gdata_player )with $11 million, bringing the 3-week total to $125.3 million. The movie has surpassed it’s $100million budget and also passed Quentin Tarantino’s last film Inglorious Bastards at the box office (it had only made $100 million).

Falling one spot and rounding out the top 5 is Les Miserables (clip ‘Javert releases prisoner 24601 on parole’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8WSysB5vKM&feature=youtube_gdata_player ) with $10.1 million. This brings the 3-week total to $119.2 million. The movie has been doing well at the box office, this week it marks as the 5th highest grossing musical. It only needs another $8.6 to take the #4 spot from Enchanted.

There are three movies set to premiere this week with a story of two kids who have an eerie connection to their mother in Mama; a story about a crooked mayor in Broken City; and a story of a man who is the last hope to catch an escaped drug kingpin in The Last Stand. Broken City and Mama have a chance at cracking the top 5, but I’m not sure they will have enough to take the #1 spot.
