Box Office: ‘TMNT’ takes down cops and aging actors

New to theaters this weekend were “Let’s Be Cops,” “The Giver,” and “The Expendables 3.” On Monday, the Box Office updated their charts to feature the top 10 movies of the weekend. Did any of the three new additions kick previous champs “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” out of their top spot though? Find out below.

From the three debuts, “Let’s Be Cops” was the winner with $17 million. Breaking even, since its reported budget was $17 million. Unfortunately, this was not enough to beat “TMNT,” “Let’s Be Cops” opened in third place. It was also not enough to take down “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

“Let’s Be Cops” did a lot better than “The Expendables 3” though. The third chapter in the dying franchise accumulated just over $16 million. Overseas, the Expendable series always does fairly well, so it’s unlikely that we have seen the end of the aging actors teaming up.

“The Giver” debuted in fifth place with an estimated total of $12 million, despite an award winning cast. Cinemablend blames the low score on limited marketing and little advertising. Below is the complete top 10 chart for the weekend of Friday, August 15, through Sunday, August 17:

1. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” $28.4 million

2. “Guardians of the Galaxy” $24.7 million

3. “Let’s Be Cops” $17.7 million

4. “The Expendables 3” $16.2 million

5. “The Giver” $12.7 million

6. “Into the Storm” $7.7 million

7. “The Hundred-Foot Journey” $7.1 million

8. “Lucy” $5.3 million

9. “Step Up All In” $2.7 million

10. “Hercules” $1.9 million
