"Twilight: New Moon" destroyed the rest of the box office to the tune of $140m
Each week, the Comedy Examiner gives you a rundown on how things-- particularly comedies-- are doing at the box office. This weekend, though, things-- particularly comedies-- were totally irrelevant in the wake of the release of "Twilight: New Moon", which racked up an astounding total for the weekend. Read on for the figures, my gentle Examiner readers...
Earlier this weekend, we provided you with a head's-up on "Twilight: New Moon" pulling down an amazing $72.7 million on Friday, and now we've got the total for the weekend: $140 million.
With numbers like that, it's not hard to believe that the rest of the movies in release all had a big, sloppy bite taken out of their totals.
Let's take a look at the top ten and see what sort of damage "Twilight" hath wrought:
1. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," $140.7 million
2. "The Blind Side," $34.5 million
3. "2012," $26 million, $108.2 million to date.
4. "Planet 51," $12.6 million
??5. "Disney's A Christmas Carol," $12.2 million, $79 million to date.
6. "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," $11 million, $21.4 million to date.??
7. "The Men Who Stare at Goats," $2.7 million, $27.6 million to date.?
8. "Couples Retreat," $1.9 million, $105 million to date.
9. "The Fourth Kind," $1.7 million, $23 million to date.
10. "Law Abiding Citizen," $1.6 million, $70 million to date.
As you can see from the numbers above-- helpfully listed out by our friends over at HitFix, the awesome entertainment site-- "Twilight: New Moon" destroyed all newcomers and top ten veterans as it came into theaters. The next highest grossing film was Sandra Bullock's "The Blind Side" with about $35, a fraction of what "Twilight: New Moon" did over the three-day period.
In other news, "2012" held on a bit with $26 million-- a large dropoff from its huge opening last weekend. Let's see what HitFix has to say about that film's drop:
Coming in third with an almost 60% drop was "2012" which grossed another $26.5 million for a new 10 day cume of $108.2 million. The Roland Emmerich disaster flick looks like it will top out a little over $200 million in the U.S. when all is said in done. Lucikly for Sony, it's playing much better overseas.
Word, Hitfix: Word. A 60% drop is pretty hefty, but totall reasonable for a film that's clearly marketed on the strength of its special-effects alone (it'll be interesting, by the way, to see what sort of staying power "Twilight: New Moon" has when it gets to the end of next weekend). The only other new release, "Planet 51"-- a family comedy about aliens and spacemen and blah, blah, blah-- came in fourth with a disappointing $12.6 million.
As for the rest of the top ten, you can see it yourself above.
