Yes, the former boy wizard can still make magic.
Daniel Radcliffe’s new movie may not have hit the top spot on the North American box office charts this weekend, but it came pretty close.
The Woman in Black, a rather satisfying horror film, came in second place with a whopping $21 million from Friday through Sunday, according to box office estimates provided by Paul Dergarabedian box office analyst for Hollywood.com.
If Radcliffe worried that he may have issues with box office appeal post-Harry Potter, this should quell them somewhat. The Woman in Black’s debut wasn’t enough, however, to stand up to Chronicle, the tale of a three teens who suddenly acquire superpowers.
That film grossed $22 million for the weekend to take the top spot despite having no major stars in the cast. The only other new release of the week, Big Miracle, swam its way to the fourth spot with $8.4 million. Liam Neeson’s The Grey, last week’s top film, ranked third with $9.5 million and Underworld Awakening rounded out the top five with $5.6 million.
Here are this week’s Top 10 films according to Hollywood.com’s Paul Dergarbedian:
Chronicle (Fox): $22 million
The Woman in Black (CBS Films): $21 million
The Grey (Open Road): $9.5 million
Big Miracle (Universal): $8.4 million
Underworld Awakening (Sony): $5.6 million

Red Tails (Fox): $5 million
The Descendants (Fox Searchlight): $4.6 million
Man on the Ledge (Summit): $4.4 million
