On Sunday, the first weekend box office results of 2013 came in, and "The Hobbit" was torn to shreds, with the new movie "Texas Chainsaw 3D" coming in at the top. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" fell two spots, in fact, all the way to third place.
"Texas Chainsaw 3D" murdered the competition, with a take of $23 million even for its first weekend. The movie, less a remake and more a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's low-budget 1974 cult horror classic, stars Alexandra Daddario, Dan Yeager and R&B singer "Trey Songz," who was reportedly a big draw for some viewers. The film's take was smack dab between the 2003 reboot of the series and the 2006 prequel, both released by New Line Cinema. The series is now being done by Lionsgate, which has to see the results as encouraging.
In second place this week was "Django Unchained." It continues to be a strong draw, once again finishing in the runner-up position in its second week in theaters. The film took in $20.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $106.4 million.
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" finally dropped out of the top spot after three weeks in release, finishing third with $17.5 million. Its domestic total is now $263.8 million.
"Les Miserables" dropped one spot from third to fourth, but has nothing to be ashamed about. With a weekend take of $16.1 million, it now has topped $100 million, with a domestic total of $103.6 million in just two weeks of release.
Finally, rounding out the top five was the comedy "Parental Guidance." With a $10.1 million take in its second week, the film has a total of $52.8 million, the film is easily going to make its money back based on the estimated budget of $25 million.
Falling out of the top 10 was "Monsters, Inc. (3D)." The film took in $3.9 million this week, for a total of $27.9 after three weeks in release. It's still questionable, we believe, that these re-releases, particularly of animated films, in 3D do much if anything except fatten studios' bottom lines.
