BOX OFFICE REPORT: In the end, 'Takers' stole from the Devil and 'The Last Exorcism' to take the top spot of the Weekend Final Five.
After a contentious weekend of box office estimates from Lionsgate and Screen Gems, with the indie ultimately securing bragging rights for the weekend's top grossing film with its ensemble actioner "Takers" with $20.5 million. That meant Lionsgate and "The Last Exorcism" had to settle for second place with scared up $20.3 million. And it says an awful lot about the concept of smoke and mirrors that this became such a news story as the summer box office begins its fade.
As for the rest of the Weekend Final Five, the totals remained unchanged: The Expendables remained in third with $9.5M for an overall gross of $82M. In fourth place, "Eat Pray Love" took in $6.8M for an overall cume of $60.5M as it entered its third week. The comedy stylings of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in "The Other Guys" edged closer to the $100 million mark, staying in fifth position with $6.2M for a total of $99M after four weekends.
