If you like hiking and camping the perfect place is Bowman Lake State Park and its neighboring McDonough State Forest. Set in prime forest on the Finger Lakes Trail just a “stones throw” from Norwich, these NYS Forest Preserves offer a get-a-way to nature that is unmatched.
Bowman Lake offers a secluded setting with wooded campsites and a full range of activities for the family. The site also sports rustic cabins that can be rented.
The quiet and peaceful Bowman Lake has a beautiful and large beach, nature center, playgrounds area, concession stand as well as a place to rent Kayaks or boats. You can picnic up close to lake and can enjoy the wooded cool on a hot summer day!
A short distance away off Route 220 is McDonough State Forest with hiking trails and a scenic tower that can give you a view of the whole area, which was the first “reforested” area in Chenango County. McDonogh’s stone chimney’s also stand as a reminder of the men who were stationed there planting these trees during the CCC era.
McDonogh Camp housed 180 African-American CCC workers in a temporary camp with a more permanent camp that housed 200 CCC members added later. One camp, Camp 3 was active for 8 years until 1941. Over 1,500 men had passed through its camps. The stone fireplaces of the camp that are so visible from the highway mark the historic Camp 3 location.
So to relax and a place to "get away from it all" visit Bowman Lake and the McDonough State Forest.
