Bowler Jonathan Ferrell, who scored a stunning victory in the Laughlin Cup last year, is showcasing a stunning photo that is worthy of bowling “photo of the month.”
The photo was actually taken last April while Ferrell was visiting the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame in Reno, Nev. Mark Fiala, one of Ferrell’s bowling teammates, snapped the picture.
This is actually an exciting time in Ferrell’s life. He married the former Laura Pacitto two days ago after a whirlwind, one-month romance. “She’s not a bowler,” Ferrell said Sunday. “She’s just a beautiful woman.”
The two met on the Zoosk dating website and Ferrell admitted he was smitten right away. “From the first moment, I wanted to be with her,” said Ferrell, 46. Laura is 43. The two married at the iconic Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.
Ferrell added that he will be returning to defend his championship in the newly named Barry Gurney Memorial Laughlin Cup, which will run June 27-29 and will be held at Riverside Lanes in Laughlin, Nev.
Ferrell, an amateur bowler, won last year’s Laughlin Cup title with a surprise 217-179 victory over formidable David Haynes of Las Vegas in the championship match.
“The kid [Ferrell] showed the world,” said Dustin Markowitz of Bowling Evolved, the primary sponsor of the event. “It was David vs. Goliath and David pulled it off.”
For this year’s event, the tournament name was changed to honor Gurney, who died in July at age 71 after a battle with cancer. Gurney, who lived in West Hills, was one of the preeminent bowlers to come out of the San Fernando Valley.
Ferrell has 11 perfect games and one 800 series to his credit. “My last 300,” Ferrell said, “was the first time Laura came to watch me bowl.” That perfecto came about three weeks ago in Chandler, Ariz.
The two will be living in Glendale, Ariz.
