The Bowie State University men’s basketball team ran by Virginia Union 101-82 in a crucial Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division game Monday night in Richmond before a crowd of 2,599. The win put Bowie in first place in the Northern Division and the Panthers sank to second place. The Northern Division-leading Bulldog women did not fare as well in the first game of the double header as they lost to Virginia Union 66-39.
The Bowie men will play its last regular season game against visiting Washington Adventist Saturday, Feb. 25., at 7 p.m. before playing in the conference tournament, which starts Feb. 28 in Charlotte. It was the regular-season finale for the Bowie women who must now wait and see what the pairings will be for their conference tournament also next week in Charlotte.
The Bulldog men held a slim 45-41 lead at half and scored 12 unanswered points to open the second half and take a 57-41 advantage before posting the victory. Darren Clark topped Bowie with 23 points, Jay Gavin added 20 points, Najee White 16 points (seven rebounds), Travis Hyman 14 points (nine rebounds) and Byron Westmorland 11 points. Jamaal Blalock scored 13 points for Virginia Union, Calvin Brown finished with 11 points and Juan Richards contributed 10 points. Bowie improved to 20-5 overall, 12-4 in the CIAA and 8-2 in the division. Virginia Union fell to 15-12, 10-5, 7-2.
The Bowie women started well holding a 7-3 lead with 14:36 left in the first half after a jumper by Chanita Jordan. But the Panthers’ Valentina Wheeler ignited an 11-2 run with five straight points that put Virginia Union ahead 14-9 and the Panthers never trailed again. Bowie dropped to 8-15, 8-8, 7-3 and Virginia Union improved to 11-13, 8-7, 6-3).
Bowie was behind 29-17 at the half, and 48-29 midway through the second half before Virginia Union coasted to the victory before 895. Jordan led Bowie with 13 points and six rebounds. The Panthers were led by Wheeler with 19 points followed by Danielle Ferguson’s 17 points (seven rebounds) and Vicki Collier’s 15 points.
