Taliban Video Shows Captive U.S. Soldier Taliban Video of Captured Soldier follows threat to kill him |
“I am scared. Scared I won't be able to go home. It is very unnerving to be a prisoner.” These are the words spoken by Bowe Bergdahl, a United States soldier who went missing on June 30, 2009, later identified in a Taliban video showing the solider held captive. The Pentagon confirmed Bowe Bergdahl’s identity yesterday, and today U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, stated that the U.S. is doing everything within its power to locate Bergdahl and procure his safe return.
"We are attempting to do everything we can to locate him and free him. "It's just outrageous. It's a real sign of desperation and inappropriate criminal behavior on the parts of these terrorist groups, so we are going to do everything we can to get him." Clinton said in an interview with Good Morning America.
On Sunday, CNN spoke with a spokesperson from the Pentagon, Chris Lawrence and asked how the Pentagon was responding to the release of the video. Lawrence referred to a statement released by U.S. officials in Afghanistan that states, “We strongly condemn this exploitation of a prisoner. That goes against international codes of conduct. And they talk about some of the ways in which they're going to be going after the people responsible for abducting this soldier.”
Bowe Bergdhal’s family has requested that the media respects their privacy during this trying time. Meanwhile, a family friend, Tim Baker, spoke with KTVB-TV and offered words of encouragement to Bowe. "Bowe, if you see this, know that we love you and we are praying fervently for you and prayers are going up for you from all over the world.” Baker continues, “To all of our valiant men and women, know that the American people believe in you, support you and are 100 percent behind you, and we thank God every day that you have our back."
A statement released on the Islamic website where the video was posted read, “As you can see, the American soldier is in good shape and good health, and he is being treated well based on the guidelines of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan regarding war prisoners. Any decision regarding the American soldier will be the specialty of the high order of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, may God protect him."

This guy deserves whatever they throw at him. To walk off like that (unarmed, without gear, without your comrades, etc, etc, etc) in an active war zone is foolish to say the least. Every service member knows this and is trained in some way to prevent this situation from happening as much as possible. I may be wrong but this guy went AWOL then broke the code of conduct as a POW. Maybe he should stay over there.
How does he deserve to be captured?AWOl or not? That makes no sense.I pray that the man makes it back alive!!
