Bout preview: Seattle Derby Brats vs. Portland Rosebuds

Around the northwest, if you want to catch the eye of the casual sports fan (or even the most die-hard sports fan), all you have to do is slap the words "Seattle vs. Portland" on the marquee and you will definitely have their attention. Although the rivalry in any given sport is usually pretty lopsided. For instance, the Seattle Sounders are a perennial playoff contender in the MLS while the Portland Timbers sit somewhere near the basement in the standings. And in hockey, the Portland Winterhawks are among the elite teams in junior hockey (currently ranked 2nd in the 60 team CHL) while the Seattle Thunderbirds sit outside the playoff picture (probably somewhere in the mid to late-50's if the rankings actually went down that low).

But with the Seattle Derby Brats and Portland Rosebuds, you have a high-octane rivalry that, even though it's gone Portland's way over the last couple of years, still has the feeling that the momentum could switch over to Seattle's favor with a break here and there. And the last time they the two teams went up against each other, Portland came out on the upper end with an ultra-slim 133-128 win at the 2012 Northwest Junior Roller Derby Championships last July. Portland went on to win the crown as the northwest's best junior team and Seattle finished a solid 3rd.

Now the two teams look to gain a ton of momentum on Saturday night at Southgate Roller Rink in White Center when the meet each other for the first time in 2013. This will be the Rosebuds first bout of the 2012 NW Junior season, while this will be the Galaxy Girls second bout (the first being a 255-133 win over the Kitsap Derby Brats in Bellingham two weeks ago). One team will be looking to begin defense of their championship title, the other one will be looking to make it very clear that they should be considered one of the elite contenders in 2013. With all of that on the line, it makes for more potential drama than any Sounders/Timbers or Thunderbirds/Winterhawks game has had in several years. And, of course, that makes for some awesome stuff!

And, if you need any more incentive to go, remember that this bout will feature two skaters who made the 2012 Washington All-Star Team.

Lilly Lightning

Enurgizer Bunny

And three skaters who made the 2012 Oregon All-Star Team

Tempest Fugit

Scream Cheese

Jesus Feist (who also made the final cut for the 2012 Northwest Roller Derby All-Star Team)

So yeah...this is some of the highest quality roller derby you'll see around here this year. They may play teenagers in regular life, but most certainly not on the roller derby track.

When: Saturday, January 26th

What: Derby double-header. First bout between the Seattle Derby Brats Galaxy Girls (SDB's all-star team) and the Portland Rosebuds all-star team. That will be followed-up by the Seattle Derby Brats "B" team and Portland Rosebuds home team, the Little Red Riveters.

Where: Southgate Roller Rink (9646 17th Avenue SW, Seattle, WA 98106)

Time: Doors open at 5:00pm

Tickets: You can buy them at the door for $8 each. A pretty good price for some of the best derby you'll see around here in 2013, if you ask this writer. But you usually don't, so I decided to supply that opinion free of charge.
