Bouchercon 2011: Steve Hamilton's 'Lock Artist' wins Best Novel Barry Award

Steve Hamilton’s The Lock Artist received the Barry Award for Best novel at Bouchercon 2011. This standalone work from the author of the Alex McKnight mystery series had earlier won the Best Novel Award Edgar Award from Mystery Writers of America.

Deadly Pleasures Magazine, which sponsors the Barry Awards, includes a complete list of all the 2011 nominees on its website.  The following winners, selected from that list, were presented with their awards during the Sept. 15 opening ceremonies of Bouchercon 2011.

  • Best Novel: The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton (Minotaur Books)
  • Best First Novel: The Poacher's Son by Paul Doiron (Minotaur Books: Mike Bowditch Mystery, book 1). The Poacher’s Son also received the 2010 Strand Magazine Critics Award for Best First Novel.
  • Best British Novel: The Woodcutter by Reginald Hill (HarperCollins)
  • Best Paperback Original: Fever of the Bone by Val McDermid (Harper: Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series, book 6)
  • Best Thriller: Thirteen Hours by Deon Meyer (Grove Atlantic: Benny Griessel series, book 2)
  • Best Short Story: "The List" by Loren D. Estleman (Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, May 2010)
