Bouchercon 2010: Anthony Award winners revealed

Bouchercon announced the winners of the convention's prized Anthony Awards today, October 17, 2010. Like Bouchercon itself, the Anthony Awards take their name from Anthony Boucher – mystery writer, New York Times critic and one of the creators of the Mystery Writers of America. Those attending Bouchercon by the Bay selected this year's winners.

The Mystery Series Examiner's article "Bouchercon announces 2010 Anthony Award nominations" contains the full list of nominees for the Anthony Awards. Listed below are the winners, some of whom have already received a Barry or Macavity Award at Bouchercon 2010.

  • Best Novel: The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny (Armand Gamache series #5: Minotaur)
  • Best First Novel: A Bad Day for Sorry by Sophie Littlefield  (Stella Hardesty series #1: Minotaur Books)
  • Best Paperback Original: Starvation Lake by Bryan Gruley (Gus Carpenter Mysteries #1: Touchstone). Starvation Lake also won the 2010 Barry Award for Best Paperback Original and was one of the two winners of the 2010 Strand Critics Award for Best First Novel.
  • Best Short Story: "On the House" by Hank Phillippi Ryan in Quarry: Crime Stories by New England Writers  (Level Best Books). On the House" also won the 2010 Macavity Award for Best Mystery Short Story and the 2010 Agatha Award for Best Short Story.
  • Best Critical Non-Fiction: Talking About Detective Fiction by P. D. James (Knopf). Talking About Detective Fiction also won the 2010 Macavity Award for Best Mystery Nonfiction.
