Since opening earlier this year, Papalinos NY Pizzeria has gotten a lot of press, almost all of it positive.
If you’ve somehow managed to ignore the hype, or just haven’t made it in yet, just know that the ingredients are noticeably fresh, (and local and organic when available), the pizza is really good (and affordable considering the quality), they’ve got a decent selection of beer, and even $2 PBR on draft.
The only negative is the wait, which inspires feelings of love/hate.
Love, because the long wait is almost certainly a byproduct of Papalinos’ made-to-order policy – which is practically unheard of. Instead of offering, say, your choice of cheese, meat or veggie, you can buy one slice of pizza, add whatever the hell you want to it, and they will cook that one slice of pizza for you (they put whole cheeses in the oven and add toppings as orders come in).
Hate, because there’s a reason the abovementioned policy is practically unheard of – at least on weekends. On 8pm on a Friday night, you better be willing to wait for that one slice of pizza – and by wait we’re talking one hour, plus. And, because they don’t offer that premade cheese or veggie or meat slice, even the most basic order is going to cost you a small chunk of your life as it waits in line behind some group of dudes' eight topping behemoths.
Coming in third for Best Pizza in LEO’s Reader’s Choice 2010 didn’t help matters.
If you’re not in a rush however, there are worse ways to spend a Friday or Saturday night than people watching from a sidewalk patio in the Highlands drinking a cheap beer waiting for what promises to be a great-but-probably-not-worth-this-wait-but-screw-it-I’m-already-here slice of pizza (Winter could get interesting, though).
Or, better yet, maybe just skip the weekend altogether. Every Thursday Papalinos has an all-you-can-eat night, and while pizza isn't actually involved, grab a $3 or $4 slice anyway and just take advantage of the bottomless draft beer:
