Bottle caps: Strange collections

On every, Chicago thoroughfare, bottle caps lie in gutters, on grass and on sidewalks. Chicago’s parks have thousands of bottle caps. These bottle caps usually have logos that represent different brands. Logos make them artistic. People who collect bottle caps are strange collectors. Strange collectors can create unique, art exhibits.

Chicago’s pedestrians, instead of Chicago’s motorists, are more likely to notice bottle caps. (However, after Chicago’s, recent snowfall, it will be difficult to spot any bottle caps.) These improperly discarded caps come in five, main varieties.

Beer bottle caps have serrated edges. Although some tough men and women may remove these caps from bottles using their teeth, the usual, removal method is by using a bottle opener. It is easy to spot Budweiser, Miller, Heilman’s Old Style and Heineken's Light. Rare, beer bottle caps would be Blatz and Hamm's.

Wine bottle caps are twist off caps. Wine coolers like Bartles & Jaymes have serrated edges on their caps. Imported wines and domestic wines will have smooth edges and even corks on their undersides. The best wines require that consumers remove the plastic wrapping, and then use corkscrews to remove the corks.

Hard liquor brands like Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Grey Goose Vodka have serrated edges and smooth edges with corks, respectively. (I did not realize that vodka required some careful bottling.) Most, hard liquor brands have twist off caps.

Juice brands like Mistic, Dole and Tropicana have twist off caps with smooth edges. The buttons on these caps pop up when the seals are broken. Consumers should reject bottles where the buttons are already up.

Nowadays, soda pop bottles and bottled water have twist off caps. Slight difficulties removing these caps indicate that the seals are intact. Chicago’s consumers are familiar with Coca Cola, Pepsi, Fanta and RC Cola, but a truly artistic collection would include Canfield's, Nehi, Old Dutch and Green River caps. (BTW, soda bottle caps are rarely on other than two-liter bottles. Old Dutch and Green River soda bottles came in 10 ounces and 12 ounces sizes.)

Flip off tabs are just not artistic unless collectors go to extremes to make them so. (Perhaps, some artists could melt the aluminum/tin of thousands of beer and soda pop cans to use the metal in creating life-size sculptures.) Bright color and recognizable logos make bottle caps interesting collections. The strangeness factors can be dented, chipped, rare, squashed and discolored, bottle caps.
