Botran Solera 1893 rum from Guatemala

The pride of the Botran Family is expressed in their top shelf Solera 1893 spirit, produced by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala.

Using virgin sugar cane honey and a slow fermentation process, this premium rum is aged in a large solera system high in the mountains of Guatemala for many years, resting in small charred American oak barrels previously used for whiskey and sherry.

This rum exhibits a rich bronze hue, the color of rosewood, light- catching and intriguing. The opening aromas are rich -- caramelized crème brulee, new glove leather and sandalwood from the sherry and port barrels used in the Solera.  Also present are notes of vanilla, hints of peach, melon, orange zest and toasted wood. Age has intensified the aromas; clearly this is a robust yet sophisticated spirit with great promise.

Lush and mouth filling, the rich sweetness of honey and maple syrup are balanced with notes of toasted wood and baking spices on the mid-palate, like crushed clove, grated nutmeg and black pepper. Also present are notes of prune preserves and cedar shavings. It finishes with a surprising snap, given the richness that’s come before. At the end, notes of medium roast coffee, cocoa and licorice appear along with a citrus quality dominated by sour orange. Mature, sippable, cigar-ready and elegant.

The new stately bottle design suggests a fine cognac and many would agree that this rum approaches the same in it's complexity and rich flavor profile.

In spite of it's noble heritage and exceptional ratings, this rum is generally available for less than $35, an exceptional value.

The Ron Botran brand of spirits was established in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala in 1939, situated at more than 7,500 feet above sea level. The corporation was founded in 1963 and they currently export a wide range of fine rums throughout the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe.
