Forecast discussion: With the help of milder temperatures, Boston saw a lot of snowfall melt away. At Logan Airport, the high temperature for the day was 48 degrees. We will continue to see milder temperatures through the weekend, but winter will be returning by early next week.
The latest radar imagery shows light to moderate rain moving over the state of Rhode Island at the moment. This is due to a warm front crossing through Ohio and West Virginia. The precipitation will move over Boston by the morning commute. We will see heavier rainfall move over the area by the afternoon. This may create street flooding, due to any remaining snowfall clogging storm drains. Also, there is enough warm air and enough upper level dynamics to create some isolated thunderstorms. So, do not be surprised if you hear a rumble of thunder and get some gusty winds.
As we move into the weekend, a strong high pressure ridge will build over Southern New England from the west. We will have dry weather, but temperatures will begin to slowly decrease. We will have high temperatures remain above freezing, but we will see temperatures below freezing by Sunday night. In fact, isolated snow showers are possible Sunday night into Monday, as some moisture passes through the area, along with a frontal boundary.
By Monday, temperatures will make us remember we are still in winter. Highs will barely get to freezing. Also, I am watching the models very carefully for a coastal low developing Tuesday morning. Right now, a weaker low over New York will help create some snow showers by the middle of the morning on Wednesday. We may see light snow right into Wednesday evening, before ending around early Thursday morning. We will return to dry weather next Thursday.
