Forecast discussion: After many days of forecasting it, a complex low pressure system came into Southern New England, and helped bring some much needed rainfall. Fortunately for the capital city, it did not receive the substantial amounts of rain other parts of the Northeast U.S. received. Based on observations from Logan Airport, the city only received less than an inch of rain. That is less than Providence, which received 2.24 inches, and Smithfield, RI, which received 3.61 inches. The big winner, or loser, depending on how you look at it, was Islip, NY. They received a total of 13 inches of rain in 24 hours, with 5 inches falling in just one hour!
Thins will begin to dry out this evening as the double low pressure system will move to the north and east. We will see clearing skies this evening, with bright sunshine to start Thursday. High pressure over Arkansas will bring us dry weather for the first half of the weekend. Temperatures, however, will remain slightly below normal for the middle of August, as we only reach the middle to upper 70’s.
As we move into Sunday, the computer models continue to show a low pressure system over Quebec picking up moisture from the Great Lakes. This will help bring some isolated to scattered showers over eastern Massachusetts by Sunday afternoon. The weak front will move offshore by early Monday morning, and we will return to dry weather to begin early next week. Temperatures will slowly try to climb to 80 or reach the lower 80’s in the capital city.
