Metro Boston, North Shore and Metro West: Last month we were talking about a cooler than normal month before the Summer heat and humidity roared back the last week of August and continued into the start of September. Through the first four days of September temperatures are near 9 degrees above normal and with temperatures expected to reach well into the 80s the next couple of days we are destined to end the first week of September with temperatures more reminiscent of August than September. But, changes are on the way that will have us thinking about Fall by the end of the upcoming weekend.
High pressure to our south will draw very warm and humid air over the region Friday and Saturday. Although Friday morning starts out comfortable temperatures are expected to soar well into the 80s across the landscape under a mainly sunny sky. By Friday night the humidity levels become uncomfortable once again with temperatures only falling into the upper 60s to 70 degrees. Skies cloud up overnight as a cold front approaches from our west. Areas of fog will develop through the night. Southwest winds generally 5 to 15 mph through Friday night.
Saturday will be an uncomfortably warm day with humidity nearing oppressive levels. The sticky air mass will most likely trigger some showers and thunderstorms with the possibility of locally heavy downpours as the front approaches. Temperatures once again climbing into the 80s as a stronger southwest breeze continues to push the warm and humid air mass across the area.
Showers and storms early Saturday night, should wind down and end overnight. Again, there is a chance of some locally heavy downpours as the front moves across eastern Massachusetts and then offshore by Sunday morning. Lows Saturday night falling back into the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds shifting to west and then northwest by morning.
The air behind the front will be refreshing with much lower humidity and cooler temperatures. Sunny to partly sunny skies on Sunday with highs only in the low to mid 70s. This will set us up for a cool night as lows fall into the low to mid 50s Sunday night under fair skies.
Next week brings an entirely different feel as temperatures run closer to normal, which is in the mid 70s for highs this time of year and it stays much less humid. Monday and Tuesday stay dry, with some clouds around but also a good amount of sunshine both days. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.
By Tuesday night skies begin to cloud up once again with a threat for showers on Wednesday.
North Shore beach outlook:
Friday: Sunny, very warm and turning humid by late in the day. High temperatures into the mid 80s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Water temperatures a comfortable 70 degrees. Surf only 1 to 2 feet.
