Boston weather: Some drier weather in store

Forecast discussion: After receiving almost an inch of rainfall, Boston will see some drier weather through the weekend. However, the low pressure center that has created a lot of destruction over the last several days will pass through the region on Sunday afternoon.

Right now, a cold front will be passing through eastern Massachusetts in the next hour. The front may help trigger a passing shower in the next few hours, before skies begin to clear. Along the south coast, there may be some dense fog within the city and along the coast, as winds turn to the southwest. The warmer wind will bring cooler air over the warmer land, creating the fog.

We will see partly to mostly sunny skies for Friday, and temperatures will remain slightly above normal. With any passing sunshine, a weak disturbance to our west may help trigger a passing shower. By Saturday, the low pressure center that helped create all the severe weather will pass off to our north. We will see the chance for some isolated showers by Saturday afternoon. However, I would not call Saturday a washout. The best chance for afternoon showers will be Sunday. A cold front associated with that low will pass through New England, creating showers and possible thunderstorms during the late afternoon. Some thunderstorms may have small hail or even ice pellets.

By the time we start the workweek, a strong high pressure system will control our weather pattern into the middle of the week. Daytime high temperatures will be slightly below normal for early May. The next chance for any significant rainfall will be next Thursday. A warm front from a low pressure system over the central U.S. will move just south of Southern New England. Temperatures will be slightly higher, but my confidence is low, as the warm front may not make it into the region. The front will bring a precipitation shield enough to the north to see showers for most, if not all, of the day.
