Boston weather: Showers, thunderstorms on Thursday

Forecast discussion: Thanks to a strong high pressure ridge, Boston received yet another beautiful day of weather on Wednesday. We kept sunshine throughout the day, which I was not expecting. Simply put, the atmosphere remained stable throughout the day. Therefore, there was no upper level motion to help begin creating high and mid-level clouds until the late afternoon. The humidity is increasing, and a cold front which has brought rain to Northern New England is working its way south.

We will begin to see isolated showers and thunderstorms just after midnight. The cold front will stall over the region on Thursday, and could help in producing locally heavy periods of rain. Thunderstorms will be widely isolated, but none of them will be severe. There may be some strong wind gusts accompanied by those thunderstorms. The front will then move slowly offshore after midnight, allowing for high pressure over the Great Lakes to help clear our skies. It will be less humid heading into the weekend, although there is the slight threat for a passing shower Friday afternoon.

Once again, we will be seeing a beautiful weekend. The weather pattern has been setting up this way for the last three weeks. A weak upper level ridge will also try to push east, and put the ridge axis right over Rhode Island early next week. This will help bring our temperatures up into the middle 80’s in some local areas Monday and Tuesday. The next threat for any precipitation will not be until next Wednesday, when a weak cold front slowly meanders across the state.
