Forecast discussion: It was a raw, cool day in Boston on Tuesday, as moisture remains in the atmosphere. We will continue to see grey skies for the next few days, as a strong low pressure system brought severe weather for the last few days. This mixture of cold air from the north meeting moist, warm air in the south has brought several tornadoes through the Southeast U.S. From 4 p.m. Monday until 3 a.m. Tuesday EDT, The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, there were 80 reports of tornadoes. To date, at least 34 people have been killed. For the latest information, click here.

Now, we will not see any severe weather within eastern Massachusetts. We will see the first raindrop until early Wednesday morning, as the precipitation shield continues moving east. The rainfall will come heavier, as the cold front inches closer. We will see the heaviest rainfall Wednesday night into Thursday morning. We could see up to an inch and a half of rain by dawn Thursday.

However, despite the rain, we will see a stark increase in our temperatures by Thursday. The warm front associated with the low will pass through the area, allowing temperatures to spike into the upper 60’s. The cold front will pass through by Thursday night, and the front will move offshore. High pressure ridging will allow for some sunshine on Friday.

As we move into the weekend, the low that created the severe weather will slowly move over the U.S.-Canada border near New York. The low will receive some upper level energy Saturday morning, giving the low the chance to create some isolated showers by Saturday evening. The upper level low will move out to sea, taking the surface low with it. We will have scattered showers until Sunday morning, with drier weather for the rest of the day. A strong high pressure system will give us mostly sunny skies to start early next week.

72 hour forecast:

Tonight: Cloudy with possible showers after 3 a.m. and a low of 42.
Wednesday: Showers developing by the late morning, with moderate rain after the evening commute. We will have a high of 49 with east-southeast winds of 9-12 mph.
Wednesday night: Rain, heavy at times, with isolated thunderstorms with a low of 46. Patchy fog is expected.
Thursday: Heavy rainfall with a possible thunderstorm tapers off through the day and warmer with a high near 68.
Thursday night: Showers/light rain ends around midnight and a low of 51.
Friday: Partly to mostly sunny skies with a high of 64.
Friday night: Mostly cloudy with a low of 47.

Extended Forecast:
Saturday: Partly sunny with possible showers by sunset. Highs 61-64, lows 46-49.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers by noon, ending by midnight. Highs 60-63, lows 44-47.
