Boston weather: Partial sunshine and cool on Wednesday

The expected temperature for Southern New England at 2 p.m. EDT on June 11, 2014

Forecast discussion: During the early morning, a back door cold front came passing through Southern New England. We received a few showers after midnight, with mostly cloudy skies the rest of the day. However, temperatures for the day reached 78 degrees in Boston. As the front continues passes south of Rhode Island, there is the chance for some more showers and isolated thunderstorms until midnight.

After midnight, we will see some drier weather for a small period of time. A weak high pressure ridge coming from the Great Lakes will move over New England. We will keep the cloudy skies, but we will see peeks of sunshine from time to time. With east northeast winds, our temperatures will remain in the upper 60’s.

As we enter Thursday, the ridge will begin to weaken. A low pressure system now moving into central Canada will move towards the east coast. This low will help bring the return of shower activity by the afternoon. The low will also pick up some moisture from the Great Lakes to bring back more widespread precipitation by Friday. The heavier precipitation may continue into the evening hours.

The cold front will finally push offshore by early Saturday afternoon. We should see some sunshine by the late afternoon. We will have partly cloudy skies by Saturday night, with bright sunshine on Sunday. The high will begin to move into the Atlantic late on Monday, giving us dry weather, but clouds will increase during the late afternoon. At this time the American model believes we will see another cold front bring more showers by early Tuesday morning. The European and United Kingdom models show drier weather. For now, I will keep some precipitation in the forecast, although I would not be surprised if I change Sunday’s forecast over the next couple of days.
