Boston weather: Nice end to holiday weekend

Forecast discussion: Arthur has now moved into the Canadian Maritimes, as a strong high pressure system takes over our weather pattern. The high helped to bring bright sunshine and cooler temperatures to eastern Massachusetts on Saturday. Thanks to the inclement weather on Friday, several towns and cities will have their fireworks show this evening. The weather will be great for it, as we have low humidity in the air at the moment.

We could use a few days of dry weather. Officially at Logan Airport, Boston received a total of 2.23 inches of rainfall from yesterday’s weather. New Bedford, MA was hit worse, with eight inches of rain. This helped flood basements, as the water had nowhere to go in the ground or storm drains. Also, the waves are starting to calm down, but there is still the chance for some strong rip currents at the local beaches. Otherwise, we will see mostly sunny skies, but windy conditions.

The humidity will begin to increase once again on Sunday, as winds remain from the southwest. We will begin to see some afternoon clouds on Monday, with the chance for some showers and thunderstorms late Monday night. The precipitation will be due to a slow moving cold front. The front will not make its way into New England until late Wednesday night. However, the computer models do suggest the chance for some strong thunderstorms on Wednesday.

After the front moves offshore, a new high pressure system will bring cooler temperatures and lower humidity for the start of the next weekend. This would make for five straight weekends of sunny weather.
