Boston weather: Nice but cooler weather Friday

Forecast discussion: High pressure centered over the Great Lakes brought bright sunshine to the inland region of eastern Massachusetts on Wednesday. However, along the Cape and Islands there remained low clouds with a few isolated showers. This activity was due to a cold front that passed through Boston last night. But, it stalled just south of the Cape and Islands throughout the day. Hence, the extra moisture and instability stayed in place for the grey weather.

As we move through the overnight, the cold front will slowly push south and east. So, the entire region will see partly cloudy skies by late in the day. Temperatures will be slightly below normal for this time in July, as northeast winds begin to turn to the east-southeast in the afternoon. However, the winds are coming off the cooler ocean waters, resulting in the cooler temperatures.

As we head into the weekend, Saturday looks nice, and winds will turn to the southwest, making for a land breeze. Sunday will not be a bad day, but we will begin to see increasing clouds during the afternoon and evening. We may even see some scattered showers before sunset. This will be due to a large area of low pressure, which will bring northwest winds and the risk of some thunderstorms by Monday afternoon. The best chance for strong thunderstorms will be Tuesday night, as the front pushes through Southern New England.

We will see lingering showers and thunderstorms through the end of Wednesday morning. We will begin to see partial clearing during the afternoon, before skies become partly cloudy Wednesday evening. Mostly sunny skies are expected for next Thursday. Also, a strong upper level low center will be to the northwest of New England. This low will help bring some cooler air into the region by the middle of next week. Temperatures during the day may only reach the upper 70’s to lower 80’s.
