Metro Boston, North Shore and Metro West: Another mild day is on tap for Sunday before we take a plunge back into winter this week. A cold front will traverse the area with a weak disturbance moving south of the area tonight. An afternoon rain shower is possible, most of you won’t see anything, with a chance for snow showers later tonight and possibly lingering into the Monday morning ride to school and work. There is a chance for occasional periods of light snow later tonight across metro Boston and the immediate suburbs. The system is not expected to produce much snow tonight and generally a coating or so would be about all to the north and west of Boston. Areas to the south may see an inch or so. The activity will end early Monday morning, perhaps lingering along the North Shore through the morning commute. As the system departs colder air begins to move in Monday which will be the start of what will turn out to be a cold and wintry week.
High pressure expands eastward early in the week and allows for dry and cold conditions Monday and Tuesday. Then, we look to our south for the possibility of an ocean storm impacting the area on Wednesday. With the colder temperatures in place any precipitation we get from this storm will be snow in the local area. The storm is expected to move southeast of Nantucket Wednesday. It could be a close call and the scenario would range from several inches of snow to a near miss. Time will tell as we get further computer runs and work out the details on what this ocean system is likely to do. So, stay tuned because a direct impact will mean a disruptive day of travel and the usual commuting headaches and the like.
Once that system moves past us the door will be open for a chunk of very cold air to pay us a visit late this week. Many of us may see lows in the single digits Wednesday night and Thursday night.
