We started our Sunday morning off with showers as a cold front slices across eastern Massachusetts this morning. Rainfall has totaled about ¼ to ½ inch throughout the area as of about 8 am this morning. We do not expect much additional rainfall as the solid line of showers is on the coast at mid morning. Once the cold front moves offshore skies will begin to partially clear for the afternoon. Temperatures in the low 60s this morning will only recover by about 10 degrees, topping out in the low 70s through the afternoon. Winds turn west at 5 to 15 mph.
It should be noted that the autumnal equinox takes place at 4:44 this afternoon, meaning that the hours between day and night are essentially the same, the summer season is officially over and Autumn begins.
A much cooler and dry air mass follows in the wake of the cold front and it will feel the season overnight and Monday. Back to a Fall like feel as lows tonight slip back to the mid and upper 40s under a moonlit mostly clear sky. A mostly sunny day, much cooler and breezy day follows on Monday. After a cool start highs recover to only the low 60s in the afternoon. With low pressure stacked up over the Canadian Maritimes we will be under the influence of a cool northwest breeze all day, with some gusts to around 25 mph.
High pressure begins to edge into New England Monday night and Tuesday. This feature will dominant our weather through the week ahead and brings another dry and pleasant week of weather to the area.
With the winds diminishing Monday evening it will be a chilly and mostly clear night. Lows may dip into the mid 30s through some of the colder inland valleys, upper 30s to low 40s elsewhere, to mid 40s in and around the immediate Boston area. Lighter northwest winds at about 5 to 15 mph.
After a chilly start on Tuesday we will see temperatures recover nicely, reaching the mid to upper 60s through the afternoon. Plenty of sunshine once again with northwest winds continuing.
Tuesday night, a few clouds about the area, lows falling back into the 40s to the low 50s in Boston.
Wednesday through Friday will feature more pleasant weather but with more clouds overhead. Skies will likely average out partly cloudy, highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and overnight lows generally in the 40s, upper 40s to near 50 on the coast.
