Forecast discussion: You may have felt a big difference in the temperature today when you started back to work or school in Boston on Tuesday. By the time you walked out, you were probably wondering why it was so much cooler. The high temperature for Tuesday was actually near midnight, when the temperature was 75 degrees. A back door cold front passed Boston earlier in the morning from the east. The result was our temperatures falling 19 degrees in 8 hours with patchy fog and mist over the city. East winds off the cooler ocean did not help matters, either.
For this evening, we will see scattered showers over eastern Massachusetts, as some activity comes from New York into the western part of the state. Also, the fog will continue through the overnight hours. The frontal boundary will slowly move south during Wednesday. Scattered showers will end by tomorrow afternoon, as high pressure ridging entering northern Maine will dry our skies into tomorrow evening. But, it will also keep cooler air over us into the end of the week. With the east winds and cloud cover, our high temperature will barely make it out of the lower 50’s. Temperatures will warm up about 10 degrees on Thursday.
By Friday, a new cold front will make its way into Southern New England. We will see the first rain drops from this system in the late afternoon on Friday. The shower activity will remain widely scattered throughout Saturday. As we head into early next week, a strong high pressure system will bring drier air over New England. Also, winds will turn back to the south and southwest, and an upper level ridge will move over the Northeast this time period. The two weather features will allow warmer air to return, getting out temperatures back to seasonable conditions.
