Boston weather: Improving conditions today, cooler and turning less humid

A cold front slowly moves offshore this morning pushing the muggy air and clouds out to sea.
A cold front slowly moves offshore this morning pushing the muggy air and clouds out to sea.

Metro Boston, North Shore and Metro West: Yesterdays headline stated it would be hot and humid with showers and storms late. It certainly was hot and humid with temperatures climbing into the low 90s, even a few spot mid 90s, with dew points clipping 70 degrees throughout the area. Boston reached 91 degrees making it the 4th day this season the city hit 90 or better. Last year at this time we had already hit 90 degrees or higher 17 times. Then there were the showers and storms which in fact arrived late, but frankly much later than expected. With severe weather watches and warnings up throughout counties in western and central Massachusetts earlier in the day and evening the line of showers and storms lost their punch as they reached the coast toward midnight. Some areas only saw a few sprinkles along the coastal areas.

We can say good bye to the heat and muggy air mass as the cold front slowly moves offshore early this morning. Other than a slight chance of a light shower this morning the trend today will be for skies to become partly sunny this afternoon. It will be much cooler today with temperatures moving very little, if at all, from the morning lows. Expect highs only in the low to mid 70s, coolest on the shore.

A mostly clear night follows. Temperatures cool down to the mid 50s inland, near 60 on the coast and around 63 in Boston. Very comfortable conditions for sleeping. Winds become near calm.

High pressure expands eastward during Friday and brings a delightful day of weather. Sunshine with a cool start to the day with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s coast to low 80s inland during the afternoon. Light and variable winds become southeast along the shore at 5 to 10 mph. Overnight lows fall back to around 60 degrees under a mainly clear sky.

The weekend starts off nice with mostly to partly sunny skies on Saturday. Temperatures warm into the low 80s, perhaps upper 70s on the beaches.

The high pressure system will move offshore as a complex area of low pressure becomes the main feature Sunday with a warm front draped to our southwest. This means clouds increase Saturday night with a good chance for showers on Sunday. As the low moves slowly eastward into upstate New York and southern Quebec Monday the threat for showers and thunderstorms increases during Sunday through Monday. It turns humid once again by Sunday and continues into at least Monday night. The trailing cold front swings through here on Tuesday, possibly triggering a few more showers and storms.

Highs Sunday through Tuesday generally in the upper 70s coast to low 80s elsewhere. Overnight lows Saturday night near 65, then near 70 Monday night.

North Shore beach outlook:

Thursday: Mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of a shower, followed by a partly to mostly sunny afternoon. Cool for late July, highs nudging 70 degrees at best. Northeast winds 8 to 18 mph. Water temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. High tide late morning, low tide late in the afternoon. UV Index becoming high for the afternoon.
