Forecast discussion: In eastern Massachusetts, we entered day three of cleaning up after the blizzard. As of 8:35 p.m., 15,700 customers are still without power, according to National Grid. Meanwhile, NSTAR was reporting 47,617 customers were still without power, or about 4% of their total customers. Also, some schools will remain closed on Tuesday.
Despite the light rain, temperatures were warm enough for some melting. As we go into tomorrow, there will be some leftover drizzle and mist. Also, due to the warmer air over the colder snow, we have seen dense fog form. For this reason, the National Weather Service issued a Dense Fog Advisory for the state until 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.
High pressure will slowly build over the Northeast U.S. on Tuesday, once a cold front passes through the region this evening. It will also become windy tomorrow, with winds reaching 20 mph at times. As the low moves further east, the winds will diminish into tomorrow night. The high will give us dry, mild weather into Wednesday afternoon.
By Wednesday night, many computer models agree on a low pressure system, developing over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, to move along the east coast, and bring some light snow early Thursday morning. The south shore would see some accumulations, in the range of about 2-4 inches. A weak Alberta Clipper would bring some scattered rain showers for Friday afternoon.
However, these weak lows do not compare with a possible coastal low forming Saturday afternoon. The low would work its way south of Southern New England, and possible give us significant snow accumulations. The American and United Kingdom models agree with this scenario, although the American model keeps the heaviest precipitation offshore. The European model keeps the low pressure system more offshore and weaker, but will see some light snow. For now, I will keep light snow possible for Sunday, but my confidence is poor.
