Forecast discussion: A cold front passing through Southern New England may have only brought some cloudy skies to Boston, but most of eastern Massachusetts did see strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Right now, the northern part of the Cape is seeing strong thunderstorms, as Chatham has received an inch of rain in 2 hours.
Over the next couple of hours, the thunderstorms will move offshore, as the cold front moves further into the Atlantic. This will allow for a strong high pressure system centered over Illinois to bring drier air into the Northeast U.S. We will see mostly sunny skies with temperatures near 80 degrees on Wednesday.
As we approach Wednesday evening, a cold front moving into the Northern Plains will be passing through Southern New England on Thursday. This front will bring cooler air behind it, as well as create some isolated showers by the late morning. However, any shower activity will end as we enter the evening commute. Skies will begin to clear Thursday night, and temperatures will reach the lower 50’s. I would not be surprised if parts of Worcester County see temperatures fall into the lower to middle 40’s.
Temperatures will remain cool on Friday, with daytime highs only in the lower 70’s. But, as winds turn to the southwest, we will return to normal temperatures for early September. We will return to mostly sunny skies once again on Saturday, but a new cold front coming down from Canada will bring cloudy skies and some isolated showers for Sunday.
The cold front will pass to our south by Sunday night, with a new high pressure system bringing mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the lower 70’s during the day on Monday and next Tuesday. Overnight low temperatures will be in the lower to middle 50’s.
