Forecast discussion: A small line of rain showers is moving through Southern New England at the moment. The line extends from Boston to Pawtucket, RI. By the mid-afternoon, some areas may see a little mixing of snow and rain showers. However, all precipitation will end by the early evening.

High temperature forecast for January 28, 2014

By the early evening, a cold front will move through Southern New England, and we will return to bitterly cold temperatures, as they plummet into the lower teens tonight. So, any wet streets or roads may have black ice on them. So, please go slowly if you have to drive this evening or in the early morning.

High pressure in the Central U.S. will bring colder temperatures over the next few days. However, by Thursday, winds will begin to shift to the west, which is a warmer direction. On Thursday, our high temperatures will reach just near freezing in some areas. Some cloud cover expected Thursday night will help keep temperatures from falling below the lower 20’s.

As we head into the weekend, the computer models do not agree on what happens with a developing low pressure system in the Southeast U.S. The American model brings it up across the Mid-Atlantic for Saturday, giving us some rain and snow showers. But, the European model does not even show a low pressure system at all. The United Kingdom model is somewhere in between, keeping a much weaker low in the Mid-Atlantic. For now, I will keep snow and rain showers in the forecast, but I am not confident at the moment how much precipitation we will receive.

The computer models do agree that any low pressure systems will move away from the east coast for Sunday. It appears the Super Bowl will see cool temperatures, but dry weather. We will continue to see dry and seasonable weather into next Monday.
