Forecast discussion: A strong area of high pressure continues to bring cold weather to eastern Massachusetts, but we will be seeing temperatures increase as we move into the early part of next week. But, we will also see a mix of winter and spring precipitation just as we start the workweek.
Right now, we are being dominated by a big high pressure system, centered over Ohio. The west northwest winds and clear skies tonight will help bring temperatures down to the single digits to lower teens.
As we move into Sunday, high temperatures will come close to the 30 degree mark. But, we will still be below freezing. It will also be breezy, so wind chills will make it feel like the upper teens. As we move into Monday, a low pressure system will begin to develop over the south-central U.S. This will help set up a warm front which will form late Sunday night over the Ohio River Valley. Some precipitation ahead of the front will arrive in our area Monday afternoon. It will be a combination of snow showers, along with some ice pellets and some freezing rain. As we move into Monday night, the warm front will move closer to Southern New England, and our temperatures will actually increase into Tuesday morning. This will change the precipitation from a wintry mix to just plain rain.
The warm front will move into New England by Tuesday night, and will move north of us on Wednesday. After several days of below normal temperatures, we may see temperatures reach 15 degrees above normal by Wednesday afternoon. But, this spring warmth will not last very long.
A cold front behind the warm front will pass through on Thursday afternoon. The European model is beginning to agree with the American model that the front will have possible heavy rainfall associated with it. For now, I will go with showers and light rain for Thursday, as I want to see more consistency between both computer models. Our high temperatures will only reach the lower 40’s. By Thursday night, temperatures will fall into the middle 20’s. We will actually go below normal on our temperatures on Friday, with the chance of some passing snow showers in the afternoon. By next Saturday, high pressure will return, giving us sunny skies.
