Boston weather forecast for Jan. 21, 2013 (Photos)

Forecast discussion: Like yesterday, Boston felt strong wind gusts this afternoon, and a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 P.M. this evening. The winds are due to a low pressure system moving into Nova Scotia this evening. The cold front attached to this low will pass through by about 7:30 P.M. Sunday. The mild temperatures will become a thing of the past, as wind chills this evening will make it feel like the single digits to lower teens. Also, some moisture will come in tomorrow morning, and we will see cloudy skies on our holiday by Monday afternoon.

As we move into Monday evening, a low pressure system will develop along the cold front. We will see some snow showers begin along the shoreline, and then move inland. Based upon looking at the latest computer models, the capital city could see about 2-4 inches at this time, with about 3-6 inches along the shoreline, and extending east towards the Cape and Islands. All light snow would end by Tuesday afternoon. This is just an initial forecast, as I will continue to monitor the models and update you tomorrow night. Skies will begin to clear for Tuesday evening. However, with the fresh snow, temperatures will plummet into the single digits. High temperatures will only be in the lower 20’s into Thursday.

By the beginning of the weekend, we will have to closely watch the computer models once again. Like the weather on Monday night, the models want to develop a low pressure system offshore of New England. The low would start bringing snow showers over us by the late afternoon and into the evening commute. If the low stays close to land, we would see moderate snow into Friday night, giving us some significant snowfall by the time the system winds down Saturday afternoon. However, this is still too far into the future, and the low’s track could change significantly before this time period.

72 hour forecast:

Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy with diminishing winds and a low of 18.
Martin Luther King Day: Mostly cloudy by the afternoon with light snow showers by the evening commute and a high of 31. Winds will come from the west-southwest at 7-10 mph.
Monday night: Mostly cloudy with light snow and a low of 17. Winds will turn to the north at 9-12 mph.
Tuesday: Cloudy with snow showers ending in the early afternoon and breezy with a high of 25. I’m expecting about 2-4 inches of snow in Boston.
Tuesday night: Mostly cloudy and bitterly cold with a low of 7.
Wednesday: Partly sunny with a high of 20.
Wednesday night: Mostly cloudy and continued cold with a low of 6.
