Forecast discussion: After seeing a few light showers Tuesday morning, we remained cloudy with high temperatures being 20 degrees cooler than Monday’s high temperature of 61. To add insult to injury, we will see our first snowfall of 2013.
Right now, a low pressure center moving off of North Carolina is bringing some showers to southern Connecticut. After midnight, we will begin to see some light snow showers work towards Rhode Island. By 3 A.M. Wednesday morning, the entire state should be seeing light snow, with some heavier snowfall by 5 A.M. As we begin the heart of the morning commute, we will begin to see a mixture of snow and sleet, before mixing with rain by about 11 A.M. before we see scattered rain showers for the rest of the afternoon. So, the back roads and streets may be full of slush during the evening commute. Skies will begin to slowly clear Wednesday night, and we will follow that with high pressure ridging moving over Southern New England.
We will see dry weather for the weekend, and well into early next week. However, we will be seeing a few cold fronts move through the region. The fronts will not have any precipitation, but it will bring colder air over the area, starting on Thursday evening. Some warmer air will return in time for the weekend, but a new arctic cold front will bring our temperatures down to the middle 20’s to end the extended weekend. I will be watching the long range models carefully, as the American and European models are watching a coastal low develop near Long Island next Monday night. We could see some decent snowfall totals by next Tuesday, if the low stays closer to the east coast.
