Boston weather forecast for Jan. 12, 2013 (Photos)

Forecast discussion: Right now, showers and light rain are falling in Boston, thanks to a frontal boundary moving into the Mid-Atlantic States. The rain will continue through the overnight hours, and some areas where temperatures will be near freezing will change over to some sleet, especially north and west of Boston. So, roads may be a little slippery, especially during the early morning hours. Otherwise, the precipitation will taper off through Saturday morning, with some passing drizzle into the afternoon. Temperatures will increase into the upper 40’s, as that frontal boundary becomes a warm front this evening. As we move into Sunday, the warm front will pass north of eastern Massachusetts, and this will allow temperatures to become well above normal. Some parts of the state may even reach 60 degrees by Sunday afternoon!

As we start the workweek on Monday, the cold front from a strong low pressure system will help create some showers Monday morning. However, the precipitation will be brief, as any showers will end by Monday night. But, the cold front will move through Monday afternoon, and we will begin to see the mild temperatures end. I’m expecting highs to reach the lower 50’s before temperatures begin to plummet. In fact, low temperatures Monday night will try to stay at freezing.

We will then begin a period of time when we will be seeing below normal to normal temperatures for the middle of January. A high pressure ridge will slowly build over New England by the middle of next week, but high temperatures will only be in the upper 30’s to lower 40’s. On Thursday, an Alberta Clipper may bring some snow showers for part of Thursday afternoon into the evening hours. By Friday, the small low will be offshore, and high pressure will once again bring back some sunshine. But colder air from the north will be over the region, and our high temperatures are only expected to reach the upper 20’s.
