Boston weather forecast for Feb. 3, 2013 (Photos)

Forecast discussion: For Groundhog Day, Phil did not see his shadow this morning. By his standards, this means that we are expected to see an early spring. But, first, we need to get through the first winter days of February.

Some light snow showers will be slowly moving over eastern Massachusetts during Saturday night, in lieu of a developing low pressure system near Long Island. The heavier precipitation will be well offshore, so we will not see any large accumulations. Also, there may be periods of time when we do not see any snow showers on Sunday. I’m expecting just a dusting to isolated areas of two inches around the capital city by early Monday morning, with a little more snowfall along the Cape and Islands, when the precipitation finally ends.

As we begin the new workweek, high pressure will settle over the eastern U.S. We will see partly to mostly sunny skies, but temperatures will still be below normal for this time of the year. By Wednesday, a weak Alberta Clipper will move through New England. We will see snow showers start by late morning, and end by the end of the evening commute. I am not expecting any large snowfall amounts, as the heavier precipitation remains offshore.

We will see a brief period of dry weather on Thursday, as high pressure quickly moves south of New England. But, by Friday, a developing area of low pressure will be well offshore. But, another weak area of low pressure will actually be over the state on Friday. It will briefly gain some energy from the offshore low, which could create some snow showers. However, with warmer air filtering over the region, the snow showers would turn into rain showers by mid- morning. An area of high pressure will give us mostly sunny skies for next Saturday. Temperatures will actually be normal for early February, starting on Thursday.
