Forecast discussion: High pressure over central and eastern U.S. is beginning to help bring a little bit of blue sky to Boston and eastern Massachusetts at the moment. The low pressure system that brought the overnight and Sunday morning snow and freezing rain has new centered itself over Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. There is still some light snow and freezing rain just moving away from Boston and Cape Cod. Boston did see about 3-5 inches from the storm, while Plymouth County, the Cape, and the Islands did receive about 5-8 inches.
For tonight, we will have clear skies and very cold temperatures. Also, we will still have strong winds, due to the high trying to build over us, and the low pressure system still influencing the area. Eastern Massachusetts has a Wind Advisory in effect until 12 a.m. Monday morning. Meanwhile, the Cape and Island have a High Wind Warning in effect for 10 p.m. Winds will still be breezy on Washington’s Birthday, but winds will diminish by tomorrow night.
The next storm system will arrive by Tuesday. Some warmer air will move in ahead of a warm front, and the precipitation will be mostly rain. However, it may start as a mix of rain and snow during the late morning. Despite temperatures reaching freezing Tuesday night, the precipitation will remain as rain. The rain will taper off by early Wednesday morning, and we should see mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. We will continue to see sunny but cooler temperatures entering the weekend.
As we move into Friday night, a coastal storm will bring the chance for some snow showers before midnight. The snow showers will continue into Saturday. The computer models indicate the low will continue to move offshore, so I will give us dry weather for Sunday. Temperatures may reach 40 degrees for a high temperature, with lows in the middle to upper 20’s.
