Boston weather forecast for Dec. 27, 2013

Forecast discussion: A low pressure system is now moving into the Gulf of Maine, after giving eastern Massachusetts some rain, snow, and a mix of both. However, only a coating fell where it remained snow. We will be entering milder weather for the weekend, before a storm brings a lot of rainfall for Sunday.

Right now, skies are clear or beginning to clear, as an area of high pressure ridging comes over Southern New England from the southwest. This ridge will protect us for Saturday, and temperatures will slowly rise into the upper 30’s, as winds shift to the west, which is a warmer wind. We will see some stars and clouds by early Sunday morning, as a low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico forms. It will race towards the New Jersey coastline by Sunday afternoon, bringing some showers by Sunday afternoon.

Last night, the computer models were unsure of the forecast track. However, this afternoon’s model runs show more consistency with the low’s track. We will see some gusty winds along the coastline as this low passes over Nantucket Sunday night. Also, with astronomical high tide, there might be the threat of some coastal flooding. Also, we will see the heaviest rainfall during the overnight hours into Monday morning.

By the end of the morning commute on Monday, we will see partly sunny skies. Also, the mild temperatures will disappear, as a cold blast of Arctic air comes down throughout New England. If you happen to be travelling to New Hampshire or Vermont for New Year’s Eve, please bring some warm layers. Temperatures may be near or below zero when the clock strikes midnight. For us in Boston, temperatures will be in the lower to middle teens.

As we begin 2014, a quick moving cold front will bring some possible snow showers by the evening. As we finish the extended outlook, the American model has be a little concerned. It is developing a quick moving low pressure system over the Great Lakes, picking up moisture. It will then bring light snow to the area by midnight. Thursday looks like we will see light snow, but the low stalls offshore. We would then see steady light snow right into Friday morning. At this time, my confidence is extremely low, as there are no other models showing any type of low pressure near Southern New England.
