Forecast discussion: In Boston, a stationary front has dipped south from Northern New England, bringing those milder temperatures down into Rhode Island, while the colder air filters through eastern Massachusetts. Temperatures have fallen into the middle 30’s at the moment in the capital city, and will remain here for the next 12-18 hours.

Along with the front moving south, a low pressure system over Tennessee will bring us heavier rainfall for Monday. We will see showers and light rain arrive during the overnight, and continue throughout the day. Any showers will change over to snow showers around midnight, but end before the morning commute on Christmas Eve.

It will be colder on Christmas Day, as daytime highs stay well below freezing. Some milder air moves in for Thursday, but a quick clipper type system may give us some passing snow showers in the afternoon. A high pressure system will move in for our weekend, giving us mostly sunny skies for Friday and Saturday.

Sunday looks to be an interesting day to the models. A cold front will slowly make its way through the Great Lakes during the day, and we could see some snow showers by late Sunday night. For now, I am expecting increasing clouds starting Sunday afternoon, as the moisture works its way closer to eastern Massachusetts.

72 hour forecast:

Tonight: Isolated showers with periods of light rain after 2 a.m. and a low of 34. Patchy fog remains possible where snow pack still remains.
Monday: Widespread showers by 6 a.m., and may see light to moderate rain through the day. We will see a high of 36 with winds coming from the west-northwest at 5-8 mph.
Monday night: Precipitation changes to snow showers around midnight, but ends around 4 a.m. It will be colder with a low of 31 and west-northwest winds of 11-14 mph.
Christmas Eve: Partly sunny and colder with the high only reaching 34.
Tuesday night: Partly cloudy and chilly with a low of 18.
Christmas Day: Mostly sunny with a high of 26.
Wednesday night: Mostly cloudy with a low of 22.

Extended Forecast:
Thursday: Partly sunny with possible afternoon snow showers. Highs 38-41, lows 26-29.
Friday: Mostly sunny. Highs 35-38, lows 22-25.
Saturday: Mostly sunny. Highs 32-35, lows 24-27.
Sunday: Mostly sunny in the morning, with increasing clouds through the day. Highs 39-42, lows 27-30.
